In the class Medieval Monsters: Terrors, Aliens, and Wonders taught by Dr. Asa Mittman and Dr. Sherry Lindquist, we examined the role of monsters in medieval art, manuscripts and culture. I have learned that the parameters by which a monster is defined are contingent on either a monster's appearance or its monstrous qualities. Following its exhibition at The Morgan Library Museum, "Medieval Monsters: Terrors, Aliens, Wonders" will appear next year at the Cleveland Museum of Art from July 14 to Oct. 6, and at the Blanton Museum of Art in Austin, Texas, from Oct. 27, to Jan. 12,
"Aliens" examines how groups of people were visualized as monstrous; women, Jews, Muslims, the poor, and the mentally ill were marginalized in medieval society, as reflected in their representation in art. "Wonders" presents monsters' fascinating ability to inspire wonder and awe. The accompanying catalogue, Medieval Monsters: Terrors, Aliens, Wonders, features full-page reproductions of 61 works in the exhibition, a Director’s Foreword by Colin B. Bailey, a preface by China Miéville, and essays by Sherry C. M. Lindquist and Asa Simon Mittman. Mittman and Sherry Lindquist are co-curating Terrors, Aliens and Wonders at The Pierpont Morgan Library and Museum. Mittman is an active (and founding) member of the Material Collective, and a regular contributor to the MC group blog. Long range research interests include the Franks Casket and images of Jews on medieval maps.
